Green infrastructure development in urban water

Context

The ecological destruction caused by inflexible and linear urban water development that is rapidly diminishing the capacity current and future water related infrastructure in meeting the water related needs of mankind and the environment. This also has negative effects on food security and energy needs.

The broader context to this guideline is that of bioresources engineering where it can be seen as the protection and enhancement of  bio-ecosystem services through resilient socio-bio-ecological systems. In other words it is the utilization of natural resources that should at sustain the bio-ecosystem while sustaining the man-made operation, both of which, and together, would be able to adapt to systemic change like climate change.

Thus bioresources engineering is the 'discipline' that produces green infrastructure.

It can probably be argued also that bioresources engineering involves, simplistically perhaps, the three 'streams' , or metabolic flows, that produces the biological world, i.e. the 'solid' matter, water and air. Implicit in the above is the 'management' of the above flows.

Approach in brief

It would for convenience sake be divided in a 'physical' and 'non-physical' aspects. The former would cover what one would do on the ground as it were and the latter how one would manage that. As one will see they are inter-related.

The physical aspect simplistically would 'store, use, treat, re-use' in-situ, the scale dependent on the local specifics and management dynamics and likely at nested scales. The non-physical or management aspect would depend on, again simplistically, 'learning by doing'.

At this stage it may be difficult to 'visualize' what the above may entail.
